Limits to autonomous adaptation in response to coastal erosion in Kosrae 419 Adaptations can be either autonomous or planned and depending on their timing they can be reactive or anticipatory (Smit and Wandel, (2006), p.282; Smit et al., 2001). Autonomous adaptations are initiatives by private actors (e.g., individuals and households) rather than public actors (e.g., governments and NGOs.

Coastal areas of the world are physically dynamic in nature. The present study contributes new knowledge to studies on coastal land dynamics and land susceptibility to erosion. This study developed a raster GIS-based model namely, Land Susceptibility to Coastal Erosion (LSCE) to assess erosion susceptibility of coastal lands under hydro-climatic changes.

You will work on a PhD study (4 years) on “Coastal wetland resilience to sea level rise and the role of bio-geomorphic self-organization”. Coastal wetlands (tidal marshes, mangrove forests, seagrass beds) provide important functions (such as biodiversity conservation, carbon capture and storage, fisheries production, etc.) that are threatened by global climate warming and resulting sea.

Coastal Erosion is one of these physical processes, wearing away and redisturbing solid elements of the shoreline as well as sediment, normally by such natural forces as waves, tidal and littoral currents and defla- tion. The coastal sediments, together with those arising from inland erosion and transported seaward by rivers.
